Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. A handshake is an acceptable form of greeting. However, people of the opposite sex may choose not to shake hands with each other.

2. In the north where there is a strong Muslim influence, men and women will be segregated in public and in private homes.

3. Be sure to dress modestly, especially in the north. Women and men should observe the Muslim dress code.

4. Never expose the heel of the foot to a Muslim. Always remove shoes before entering a home or mosque.

5. The left hand rules apply. Do not take or give anything with the left hand. Do not eat with the left hand.

6. Dinners may be served from a common bowl and without eating utensils. Try not to let fingers touch the lips or mouth.
