Cultural Etiquette

Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. Smokers should always ask permission to smoke around Eritrean acquaintances, especially the elderly.

2. Only eat with the right hand.

3. Do not be surprised if no utensils are offered with dinner. When in a situation that requires you to eat with your hand, make sure fingers never touch your mouth.

4. Do dress modestly.

5. Respect the Muslim traditions and codes of etiquette, but note that Eritrea is not a strictly Muslim country. A large segment of the population is Christian, belonging to the Orthodox church. Be sensitive to these religious divisions.

6. Note that discussions about the political relationship between Eritrea and Ethiopia should be avoided; culture, sightseeing, music and travel are better subjects for conversation.
