Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. Traditional Muslims will not shake hands with persons of the opposite sex.

2. The predominant religion is Islam. Therefore, the left hand should never be used to give or receive anything. Never expose the heel of the foot to a Muslim. Never give a gift of alcohol or pork. Remove shoes before entering a house or place of worship.

3. Bathing suits should only be worn at the beach, never in a village. One should always dress modestly in a village. Everything from the shoulders to the knees should be covered. Nude bathing is not allowed anywhere.

4. Always ask permission before taking pictures of people.
