Cultural Dos and Taboos

1. There is a different system of etiquette found in the villages of Fiji than in urban areas. When visiting villages remember that villages are privately own, you must ask permission to enter the village. Visitors should also ask "permission to picnic, fish, or surf within the boundaries of the village". Usually you will not be refused, especially if you present the village chief with a gift of kava root.

2. There are rules of respect that should be adhered to when in a Fijian village. Do not wear a hat; the village chief is the only one who wears hats. Women should dress modestly; avoid wearing shorts, and keep shoulders covered. Remove shoes before entering a house.

3. Especially in villages, public displays of affection should be kept in check.

4. Good topics of conversation include sports, family, Fijian culture, your culture, Fiji's environment, and hobbies.

5. Never admire a Fijian's personal belonging too much; he or she may feel obliged to give it too you.

6. Don't touch the top of anyone's head.

7. Loud voices indicate anger, try to control urges to yell or break into boisterous speech and behavior.
